Structure Process -
Spring 2002 - Spring 2003
Consultations were held in
Spring 2002
in Hartford , CT , St. Louis , MO , and
Burlingame , CA.
Materials included potential options numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4, a list of
working terms and assumptions and feedback materials. These materials
were the first drafts.
Key
learnings from the consultations, however, were reported
August 2002
1.
Maintain simplicity in structure
2. Do
not pursue a new public juridic person or a new corporation, rather work
the model within the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas
3.
Explore the appropriate role of the Institute and the Institute
Leadership Team
4.
Maintain sensitivity to the local culture and insure that bonds of
relationship between schools and sponsor are sustained.
5. Honor
local autonomy and the principle of subsidiarity.
6.
Define the role of the Network for Mercy Education
7.
Explore the appropriate role of the laity in all models
8.
Explore and delineate the financial cost – insure models that are cost
effective.
9.
Consult appropriately with experts, i.e., civil and canon lawyers.
10.
Provide a model that is an expression of a collective vision for how we
will be Church and Sisters of Mercy in the future.
11.
Provide for fluidity and evolution in the implementation of the model.
12.
Develop models that will complement the results of Re-imagining the
Institute and the assumption that the Institute is moving toward an
“organic whole” after 2005.
Leading up to the October 2002
consultation prior to the MSEA gathering the structure committee met and
added materials to its proposed presentation materials. These included a
list of financial implications and a consideration of the future role of
the Network. It was agreed that the purpose of the October 2002
consultation would be:
·
To
present the revised models for sponsorship of Mercy education;
·
To seek
input from participants on the models;
·
To
determine the leaning of the group on the models;
·
To
outline next steps of the process.
1.
Dialogue
was extended at the local level with feedback to the Network by January
2003 or at a time agreed to with local leadership (depending on
board/team meetings, etc.)
2.
Assessment Form was developed. Its stated purpose: Assessment form for
Network Members: Aware of change, patterns of participation locally and
at consultations, and the desire for greater
understanding, the Structure Committee believes there is an additional
need to assess and seek input on what participants may need to
strengthen their understanding and comfort with the process and with
information and materials presented thus far. Designed for Network
member regional leadership, school leadership and board leadership
